Including a number of original short stories, this stunning collection is set in the world of Mercy Thompson – mechanic, shapeshifter and fighter – and the characters she calls friends.
This is a collection of most of the novellas/short stories from the Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega series, and it’s actually a really good collection. I hadn’t read any of these before except from the Alpha & Omega one, so these were all new to me. They all came from different POV’s, only one story was written from Mercy’s POV, so it actually gave us some great insight into these other characters we may not have heard from before. For example, the story about Warren and his boyfriend, that was written from Warren’s POV who we have never heard from before, and that was one of my favourite stories in the collection, as it was just that little bit different.
We got some of the history of Sam and Bran and how they were turned into werewolves; we learn about Thomas, who appears in the 8th book, and his history which was pretty interesting; we learn about Tom and Moira’s first meeting, who later feature in book 2 of the A&O series; we find out about how the 10 year old werewolf fares after being sent to Bran’s pack; we get a side story about Ben and how he is evolving as a character… there’s more, but that’s the gist of it.
It was well put together, each story was well written and thought out, and the background on the characters helped shape them in this expanding world so that I can appreciate them even more when reading through these series. I loved this so much for that. There were, of course, some stories I didn’t like that much as others, but unlike other anthologies, I didn’t struggle through any of the stories.
Shifting Shadows rating: 8/10
Would I re-read it? Yes
Who would I recommend it to? Fans of either series will enjoy this, as it’s the stories relating to the Mercy series and the O&A series.
