The Magician's Nephew (Chronicles of Narnia, #6)
Published in:  1955
Pages: 221
Edition read: E-book
Series: Book 1 in the Chronicles of Narnia (chronologically), or book 6 (publication order)

Book description:
Digory and Polly discover a secret passage that links their houses, and are tricked into vanishing out of this world and into the World of Charn, where they wake up the evil Queen Jadis. There, they witness the creation of the Land of Narnia, as it is sung into being by the Great Lion, Aslan.

My review:
This book is where it all starts, where Narnia is born, how the wardrobe came to exist, where the White Witch comes from, there’s Aslan.. it’s the beginning of the tale. There are two ways you can read this series- by publication order, which places this book second-last in the series (now that just silly); or in chronological order, which places this book as number 1- and works best in this order, as this book truly introduces everything. We get the background as to why and how everything came to be, setting up the rest of the series. I know this because I went on to book 2 which in publication order, is book 1- and having that background allows me to go “OH THAT’S WHO THAT IS” or “AH HAH! I UNDERSTAND THAT REFERENCE!”

Ahem. Anyways. The kids in this book are quick thinking and adventurous, and they use magic to travel to lands unknown in order to save themselves, their friends, and to make things right. They are tempted to do wrong, but end up doing the right thing, which is always a great message to kids reading this series; and they do it in a way that makes it fun.

Even though this book is 60+ years old, it still is easy to follow and resonates today, it’s an innocent playful adventure of two bored kids and reading it, you too are transported to that time yourself, so I felt like I was 8 years old while reading this- which was part of the magic.

Final review:
The Magician’s Nephew rating:
Would I re-read it? Yes I would
Who would I recommend it to? This book would be excellent for young kids to read (think 7+ year olds, they will love this). Otherwise, fans of the movie series will enjoy this, fans of the author, fans of action and adventure books filled with magic.
