My review:
It’s been a few months since I last read a book in this series, but it was easy to get back into the story, the world, and it’s characters. This book is about Andreas Reichen, who is not part of the Order, but is a friend of them and helps them out when he can. He’s been in the books since book 2, and it was interesting that he got his own story. In the 5th book, a lot of things go down for poor Reichen and he basically gets super angry and burns things (hey, we’ve all been there) and then he has to kinda deal with that in this book. Claire is the usual female character- feisty, strong-willed, small and super pretty, a perfect match for Reichen. To be honest, the female characters are starting to annoy me slightly- they are all rather similar, and it’s a little dull to read another story about a female who has the same traits and qualities as one in a prior book. At least in the last book, Renata was a really different female character (being that she was basically a warrior herself) but in this book, it’s back to defenceless female. Sigh.

One thing I do like about these books is that the characters from previous books are still around and get their own mentions. In other series I have read, it’s a book per character and you never hear about those characters again. which sucks, as by the end of each book you’ve built up a relationship with these fictional characters, you have an emotional bond with them, you want to know what happens… and radio silence. At least in this series, the old characters are still around and active, and even get their own chapters here and there (eg Lucan and Gabrielle, the two characters from book 1, had a delightful moment in this book together) and that is nice, as I don’t feel like these characters have abandoned me. Yay!

Final review:
Ashes of Midnight rating: 6/10. Look, it was an okay read, but 6 books in the formula isn’t really changing.
Would I re-read it? Probably. It wasn’t a hard read, and this series isn’t all that bad, so I’d probably read it again.
Who would I recommend it to? Fans of the series, of course. Otherwise, this is a strictly 18+ book (adult scenes by the handful in this book), really more of a female aimed book than anything. It’s paranormal romance, heavy on the smut factor, and has vampires as the main element. So if that’s your thing, this series may appeal to you.
